Harwoods Racing Club Yearling Parade 7th November

200 people joined us for our second yearling parade of the autumn last Sunday 7th November.  It was a cold but bright day and guests arrived from 10.30am and were met by Julie and Sam at the entrance for registration and a wam coffee.  People were invited to view the horses in the barns before the parade started and there was much interest and excitement around the two Harwoods Racing Club horses.

The parade started with the Rock Of Gibraltar colt led by my husband mark who showed himself well before standing on his two hind legs to wave at the crowd! Followed by a very well behaved Yes It's True colt, a striking chestnut he was paraded in hand and has since been backed and is now cantering out on the gallops.  These two colts were then followed by the Notnowcato colt purchased at Newmarket, the Forest Wildcat colt who my father purchased in America, the Nayef colt for my Coombelands Racing Syndicate.

After the parade guests were given a good strong swimming display by Curacao, in the rather cold swimming pool and then on to the indoor canterway where ten of the yearlings were ridden.

I am my staff would like to thank so many of your for joining us for our yearling parade.  30 shares in the Harwoods Racing Club were purchased on the day, the Notnowcato colt's partnership is now complete and there is just one share remaining in the Nayef colt owned by my Coombelands Racing Syndicate.

If you are interested in receiving further information about Harwoods Racing Club or any of the other horses we have shares for sale in, please do ring my office 01798 873011 or email aperrett@coombelands-stables.com.

Rio Royale romps in at Lingfield

Rio Royale won his second race of the season at Lingfield on Sunday, rounding off a good week for us that started with Warning Song winning for Geoff and Carol Bailey and my father Guy before going to the Newmarket sales where we said goodbye to 13 of our equine friends.  All found good homes as far afield as America, Austraila, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.  We wish them all well in their new homes.

The yearlings are all home from the sales and are now ridden.  We have our yearling parade this Sunday 7th November at Coombelands and if anyone wishes to join us, please do ring my office 01798 873011 to book your place.  The two colts that have been purchased for the Harwoods Racing Club will be on parade as well as serveral other yearlings in which there are shares available for purchase in.

This weekend sees the final turf meeting of the season at Doncaster.  We look to be double handed in the November handicap and both Classic Vintage and Life and Soul appear in great form.

Three winners in 48 hours

Well the Coombelands horses are flying along.  On Sunday at Ascot, Life and Soul won the Pricewaterhouse Handicap under a strong ride from Neil Callan.  A winner earlier in the year at Lingfield, this colt has been placed second at Epsom on Derby Day, fourth at Glorious Goodwood, a short head second at Ascot in the Shergar Cup and third at York, he really deserved to win on Sunday! We doubled up for Alan Spence when Dubai Crest won at Kempton on Monday also under Neil Callan.  He had been off the course since running at Epsom in June but came with a storming run down the outside to make it two from two at Kempton.

At Bath in a pea soup fog, Saborido found his way home in front from Viviani, to make it a 1-2 for Coombelands in the staying event.  Ryan Moore reported he didn't know where he was at any stage in the 2m event, good job Sabordio knew where he was having won as a three year old over course and distance.  Viviani got lost in the fog after his jockey fell off after the post and thankfully my staff, Eric Keane and Alan Mcfarlane eventually found him walking up the home straight, fully 40 minutes after the race safe and sound.

Harwoods Racing Club - Yes It's True!

YES IT’S TRUE – Harwoods Racing Club purchases it’s first racehorse!

My father Guy, attended the Keeneland Sales in Kentucky last week where he purchased a colt by Yes It’s True Whenthedoveflies for US$100,000 for our Harwoods Racing Club.

Yes It’s True was a top class sprinter in America winning over $1 million in prize money. The dam, Whenthedoveflies won 14 races and $425,000 in prize money, also over sprint distances.  This colt foaled  on the 22nd February 2009 is her first foal.

He has  been placed in his compulsory quarantine  for shipping to England at Wayne Sweezy’s Timber Town Stable in Lexington where he will remain for four weeks. During this time he will continue to be exercised and turned out in the paddock to relax with other yearlings to prepare for his flight over to England on 26th October. This means that he will not be “On Parade” on Saturday 16th October but  he will be at Coombelands in time for our second yearling parade on Sunday 7th November.

My father and I are off to the Tattersalls Sales in Newmarket from the 4th October in search of our second yearling who will be “on parade” on the 16th October and we will keep you up to date with our progress.

Kelinni

Kelinni won at Wolverhampton last Friday. The 2yo son of Refuse To Bend out of Orinoco is owned by Lady Clague of Newberry Stud and we are delighted to have won with him as a two year old. He has been given a rating of 76 and we will look to follow up his win last week in a nursery hopefully on Monday at Kempton.

Last week was otherwise all about second places. Mirror Lake was second in the Select Stakes Group 3 at Goodwood, Bramshaw at Sandown,Tamtara at Wolverhamtpon, Valid Reason at Newbury and Roxy Flyer at Newmarket.

This week, I hope Red Intrigue can win at Goodwood on Wednesday with Bramshaw trying to go one better at Ascot on Friday.  Saturday and Sunday runners are yet to be finalised and then into next week, we look to be busy running the two year olds, many who showed promise on their first starts.

Mirror Lake Wins Sponsored Race

MIRROR LAKE'S WIN MAJOR COUP FOR CLUB

MIRROR LAKE'S win in the snappily titled Harwoods Racing Club & Employees E B F Alice Keppel (Fillies' & Mares' Handicap) (Listed Race) at Goodwood today was a huge boost for Harwoods Racing Club, launched this week end at the two-day Goodwood Celebration Mile meeting.

The Prince Khalid Abdulla filly had been aimed at this race for some time and the dual-winning Dubai Destination filly read the script to perfection to win our own race, achieve her hat-trick and get some valuable black type.

It was a family affair in the Winners Enclosure as Guy Harwood presented the trophy to Amanda who doubled up as owner's representative and winning trainer.

"I'm really delighted about that," said Amanda.  "The Prince has been a tremendous supporter of mine since I took over from Dad in 1996 and it's lovely to win a Listed race with a quality horse for him," she added.

Pat Dobbs gave the 9/4 favourite a fine ride, tracking the leaders, taking it up two out and staying on strongly to lead inside the final furlong, prevailing by three-quarters of a length from Fastback.

The win equals last year's tally of 26 victories for the stable but there's plenty of the season still to run.

Harwoods Racing Club Launch

“GUY AND AMANDA LIVE ON THE MORNING LINE!”

HARWOODS RACING CLUB’S launch this week end received a tremendous boost when it was learned that Channel 4’s flagship racing programme, The Morning Line will be having Guy Harwood and his daughter, Amanda Perrett live on the programme this Saturday morning.

The one hour racing programme, on from 8 – 9am, regularly attracts around 350,000 viewers.  This Saturday morning, it will be broadcasting from just outside the Owners and Trainers bar at Goodwood racecourse.

The feature race at Goodwood on Saturday is the Group Two Celebration Mile, one of four Channel 4 races being broadcast live from the course.  Although Amanda does not have a runner in it this year,  Guy won this historic race three times in the ‘80s with To-Agori-Mou, Sandhurst Prince and Rousillon, all ridden by the late Greville Starkey and indeed Amanda won it herself with Tillerman in 2002.

However, Amanda does have one runner on Saturday, Viviani who should appreciate the step up to two miles in the last.

Harwoods Racing Club is sponsoring the first race on the card, the Harwoods Racing Club Stakes, due off at 2pm. We are delighted that 50 Harwoods Club members and owners will be joining us in our private Charlton Box on Saturday to celebrate the launch of the club.

There has already been a lot of interest expressed in the racing club among Coombelands' existing owners and we are anticipating a lot of interest this week end.  Naturally, many members will be Harwoods customers but all Coombelands owners and racing enthusiasts are very welcome to join.

For more information, please visit the web site - www.harwoodsracingclub.com

Rio Royale Wins By A Short Head

RIO ROYALE WIN NUMBER TWENTY-FIVE

RIO ROYALE, prevailed in a tight three-way photo at Brighton today over 6f to register his third career win and the stable's 25th win of the year.

Thr sprinting son of Captain Rio, unusually for his sire's progeny, likes fast conditions and took advantage of the good to firm surface to win by a short-head and a neck from Shakespeare's Son and Avoncreek.

Seb Sanders is one of the strongest jockeys in the weighing room and it took all of his strength to drive the 5/2 favourite out in the final furlong.

Both owned and trained by Amanda, this was Coombelands' sixth winner in a fortnight while 49% of all runs this year have finished in the first four.

Red Intrigue Continues Stable Run

RED INTRIGUE WINNER NUMBER 24

RED INTRIGUE continued the stable's fine recent run when winning at Newbury over 12f this afternoon for Lady Clague and so became the yard's twenty-fourth winner of the year.

Having been third in handicap company over course and distance twelve days ago, she was back in maiden company off a mark of 72 and despite some choicely bred newcomers, her previous experience paid off as she beat the favourite, Dark Promise by three-quarters of a length under jim Crowley.

This was the Selkirk filly's only fifth ever run and she is clearly getting the hang of things so will hopefully be competitive back in handicap company.

Red Intrigue's success was the stable's fifth win from the last twelve runs.

Back to Back Wins For Mirror Lake

MIRROR LAKE BOLTS UP AT GOODWOOD

MIRROR LAKE, owned by Prince Khalid Abdulla, hacked up at Goodwood today, winning by three and a quarter lengths under Pat Dobbs.

The Dubai Destination filly was following up her six length win at Kempton in June with another impressive victory today, again over 1m2f.  The 7/2 joint-favourite took it up well over a furlong out and won comfortably from Moynahan.

Running off 88, she will undoubtedly face a hike in the handicap and will probably be rated in the mid-90s.  However, this most progressive and lightly-raced individual looks to have further improvement in her and will hopefully win more races for the Prince.

Mirror Lake's win was the stable's fourth in its last eleven runs.

Across The Card Double

ACROSS THE CARD  DOUBLE MAINTAINS STABLE'S FINE FORM

GREEN ENERGY and SILENT ACT won at Brighton and Lingfield respectively on Friday to give the yard an across the card near 9/1 double, so maintaining the stable's recent good form.

The former had been gradually finding his feet and with the aid of first-time cheekpieces, won by a short head under a strong drive from Jimmy Quinn.

Backed down to 11/4 favouritism, the 3yo son of Rainbow Quest was the third win of the year for The Green Dot Partnership, which has several horses in training at Coombelands.  Many congratulations to the partnership's owners.

The double was completed more effortlessly by Silent Act who won by a comfortable three and a quarter lengths under Richard Hughes at Lingfield for very happy owners, Mr and Mrs Scott.

The Theatrical 4yo filly was five lengths up inside the final furlong but "Hughsie" was able to ease the 13/8 favourite down close home.

Silent Act's win was the third win from the stable's last four runners and the 22nd win for the year.

Saborido's Win Number Five

SABORIDO'S NAP HAND

SABORIDO'S win at Folkestone this evening was his second this season and his fifth in 17 career runs.

The four-year-old son of Dixie Union is nothing but game and won a thrilling finish to the extended 1m7f handicap for three-year-olds and upwards by a neck and a nose.

Pat Dobbs gave the grey a great ride, having him in contention throughout and making his move inside the final furlong.

Winning by short margins, a hallmark of Saborido, makes life difficult for the handicapper who will be hard pushed to raise him too much for today's narrow win.

That's good news for owners Tracey, James, Cotton and Slade and this delighted quartet is sure to have more fun with this most willing of stayers.

Saborido's win was the stable's 20th victory this year, which is just six short of last year's total.

Stable Strikes On Day Five Of Glorious Meeting

ROXY FLIES IN FOR GLORIOUS WIN

ROXY FLYER scored at Glorious Goodwood today, taking the 3yo 0-90 handicap over 1m3f in courageous style to the delight of owners, Fred and Sasha Cotton and Suzanne Conway.

The Rock of Gibraltar filly was held up by Jimmy Quinn and made good progress up the inner two furlongs from home.  Game as a pebble, the 16/1 shot squeezed through a gap a furlong out, hit the front 100 yards from the post and stayed on to beat old rival, Shimmering Moment by a length.

Jimmy Quinn rightly came in for plaudits by Channel 4 pundits Jim McGrath and John Francome.  Not the most fashionable of jockeys, he nevertheless is very strong in the saddle and earned every ounce of praise for his ride today.

Plans for this improving 3yo are likely to include a Listed race for fillies in the near future.

Later in the day, Truism, having his second race at Goodwood in five days, went one better than on Tuesday, when second in the apprentice handicap under Martin Lane.

While the yard had to wait until Day Five of Glorious Goodwood for a winner, all in all it was not a bad week with one winner and three places from just nine runs.

HARWOODS RACING CLUB

Quality Bloodstock, Group One Winning Trainer, Limited Membership

HARWOODS RACING CLUB is racing’s newest and brightest racehorse ownership scheme and Harwoods Club is delighted to announce this wonderful addition to its portfolio of activities for its members.

Goodwood hosts the prestigious two-day Celebration Mile meeting on Saturday 28 – Sunday 29 August and this wonderful week end of racing provides the perfect platform to launch Britain’s most exciting racing club.

It is being limited to just 150 owners who will share the thrills of racehorse ownership with Group One winning trainer, West Sussex based-Amanda Perrett, daughter of Guy Harwood.

Money does not guarantee success in racing but usually the better bred and therefore the more expensive the horse, the greater chance of success at the highest level.  Therefore Amanda will be searching high and low at the 2010 Yearling Sales to purchase high quality bloodstock to maximise the chance of success.

They will be at the Deauville, Doncaster, Keeneland and Newmarket sales during late summer and autumn and are looking to buy two horses up to around £75,000 each.  They will be trained at Coombelands by Amanda for two seasons and owners will be welcome to come and see their progress on a Saturday each month.  In addition, we will be hosting some special Harwoods Racing Club hospitality days at Coombelands during the season.

The horses will run in yellow and red, yellow and black silks with the distinctive “H” on the jacket.  All racecourses restrict the number of owners’ badges for Health and Safety reasons, so we will allocate them on a first-come-first served and rota basis to allow everyone an opportunity to enter the paddock.  Additional badges will be made available at a discounted rate.

At the end of the horses’ three-year-old career, they will be sold and the owners will receive a share of the prize money and sale proceeds.

The cost of joining the Harwoods Racing Club is just £2,595 (+ VAT which is fully reclaimable).  We have already had considerable interest in the Club, so if you would like to reserve your share, please call our Racing Manager, Simon Double on 07769 183362

Trovare Wins At Headquarters

TROVARE WIN NUMBER THREE THIS SEASON

TROVARE won at Newmarket yesterday making it three wins out of  four runs this season for delighted owner John Connolly.

The 3yo son of Smart Strike made all the running in the five-runner contest over 1m5f under Pat Dobbs and although the 11/4 shot was headed three out, rallied gamely a furlong from home to land the spoils by a length from Reality Show.

This one time Derby entry is a progressive sort who could get even further.  While he will go up a few pounds for yesterday's success, he might just be ahead of the handicapper, so hopefully there will be more to come.

Trovare's win was the stable's 18th for the season.

Blue Tango Wins Again

BLUE TANGO WALTZES IN FOR GREEN DOT

BLUE TANGO recorded his second victory of the season for The Green Dot Partnership when winning at Kempton tonight over 1m3f by a comfortable three-quarters of a length.

Taking advantage of his high draw (10 of 12) and benefitting from a first-time visor, he was always prominent under Seb Sanders.  After tracking the leaders for most of the race, the 13/2 shot led two out and was always holding the favourite, Cast of Stars.

Running off 67, this was his highest winning mark and given that it was four lengths back to the third, he will be at the mercy of the handicapper.

Blue Tango was continuing the recent good run of the yard as this was the stable's third winner in its last nine runs.

Curacao Wins at Newmarket

CURACAO GAINS DESERVED SUCCESS

CURACAO gained a deserved success at Newmarket today after a string of places since his back-to-back wins at Salisbury a year ago.

The 5/2 joint-favourite was running off just a pound higher than his last winning mark and despite hanging a little right and left in the closing stages of the 1m7f contest, held on gamely to win by two and a quarter lengths from Alkbabend.

Given a good ride by Neil Callan, the horse will go up a few pounds for this victory but clearly the horse loves this time of year, so hopefully he hasn't stopped winning yet for joint-owners, Mrs S Conway and Coombelands Racing Stables.

Saborido wins again

SABORIDO WIN NUMBER FOUR

SABORIDO made it win career number four this evening under a great ride by Jim Crowley at Kempton in the two mile handicap.

This son of Dixie Union, who gained three victories last year from 14 to 17 furlongs is a guaranteed stayer and while he had failed to threaten in his two starts this year, it was certainly too early to write him off.

Tonight, he made no mistake and in a thrilling race, hit the front two out, was headed inside the final furlong but got up during the dying strides to win by a head form Sheila's Castle.

Congratulations to owners Tracey, Cotton, James, Slade.

This was the stable's third winner in its last twelve runners.

Warning Song Wins Again

BACK TO BACK WINS FOR WARNING SONG

WARNING SONG followed up his Newbury win last month with another victory today when getting up in the dying strides to beat former stablemate Wilfred Pickles by a head at Bath.

Victory in this mile handicap looked unlikely three furlongs from home when he was being pushed along having gone wide on the bend.  However, Pat Dobbs had other ideas and the 11/4 second favourite responded to his urgings to get his head in front where it mattered.

A delighted Geoff Bailey who owns the horse with Guy Harwood was on hand to witness his second winner within a fortnight.

Warning Song was the stable's 14th winner of the year.

Trovare records second win of the year

TROVARE WINS BY A NECK

TROVARE won his second race in just three starts this year when beating favourite, Calatrava Cape by a neck at Headquarters tonight.

Ridden by the champion jockey Ryan Moore, he chased the leaders, led over two furlongs out and despite hanging a little, stayed on under pressure well to the delight of owner John Connolly.

The 1m4f trip clearly suits and the son of Smart Strike, sent off at 11/4,  may get even further.

This was the yard's second winner of the week and the thirteenth this year.

Warning Song Makes it 12 For The Year

Warning Song ran out a 1L winner of the Jung Pumpen & Pump Technology Handicap on Tuesday evening at Newbury in what turned out to be an incident packed race.  The son of US sire Successful Appeal was staying on well there last time having been ridden from off the pace, however, always positioned in behind the leaders this time by Pat Dobbs he ran on strongly to take command inside the final furlong.

This was a first success at Coombelands for part owner Geoff Bailey, and a welcome return to the winners enclosure for his other owner Guy Harwood and his famous ‘H’ silks.

Later on the card Roxy Flyer ran another great race when finishing 3rd in what appeared to be a strong fillies handicap, narrowly going down to two progressive individuals who could definitely develop into black type fillies before the year is out.

Yesterday was met by two further 3rds in the shape of Truism and Tamtara, both running good races in defeat and shaping as If a possible step up in trip may suit.

Mirror Lake Avenges Goodwood Defeat

MIRROR LAKE HACKS UP AT KEMPTON

Prince Khalid Abdullah followed up his double at Royal Ascot today, courtesy of Byword and Twice Over with a facile six-length success at Kempton with the yard's Mirror Lake.

Mugged on the line at Goodwood twelve days ago, the daughter of Dubai Destination made no mistake under Tom Queally over 1m2f.  Always handy, she hit the front on the home turn and quickened away to win comfortably, justifying strong market support into 6/5 favouritism.

The stable has its first runner at this year's  Royal meeting when Life And Soul contests the King George V Handicap for 3yos over 1m4f tomorrow under Paul Hanagan.  In a typically competitive handicap, this improving son of Azamour has each-way claims at a double figure price.

Across The Card Double

STABLE SCORES NEAR 20/1 DOUBLE

The first double of the year was achieved yesterday courtesy of Tamtara at Wolverhampton and Roxy Flyer at Goodwood at combined odds of nearly 20/1.

Tamtara broke her duck and justified 11/4 favouritism in the 0-70 3yo handicap over a mile and half a furlong at Wolverhampton under Pat Cosgrave for owners Mr and Mrs Scott.

The daughter of Red Ransom chased the leaders and won going away by two lengths from Miami Gaitor.  Having now tasted victory once, the filly looks as though she's capable of winning again.

The across the card double was completed by Roxy Flyer at Goodwood in a 0-75 3yo Classified Stakes over 1m3f at odds of 9/2.

This was only her third start and the Jimmy Quinn ridden Rock of Gibraltar filly also looks capable of further success for owners Mr & Mrs Cotton and Mrs Conway.

Despite taking a keen hold early on and not getting a clear run she ran on strongly and prevailed by half a length from Megio Ancora.

The yard is in good form and was denied a treble when Mirror Lake was mugged on the line in the 3yo mile maiden at Goodwood while the last stable runner of the day, Rio Royale returned to form with a third at the course at 25/1.

Trovare Wins at Goodwood

TROVARE APPRECIATES STEP UP IN TRIP

TROVARE stepped up in trip to 1m 3f at Goodwood on Saturday when one of eight runners in the 3yo 0-70 handicap and the son of Smart Strike won comfortably by a length and a half under Philip Robinson.

He had had three runs last year over 7f and a mile but the Derby entry was always going to be better over further.

During the race he took a keen hold, chased the leaders and led during the final 100 yards, staying on strongly from Boston Blue.  Being rated 67 would rule him out of any Derby picture but there looks to be more to come from this progressive colt.

Congratulations to John Connolly for whom this was his first winner this year as an individual owner.

Coasting Defies Absence

COASTING WINS AFTER 1007 DAYS OFF TRACK

COASTING defied both top-weight and a 1007-day absence to win at Newmarket today over 7f under Pat Dobbs for owners Sir John Ritblat, David and Jennifer Sieff.

Twice a winner as a juvenile, the now 5yo son of Cape Cross looked a picture in the paddock and was indeed awarded Best Turned Out, putting paid to the superstition that Best Turned Outs don't win races!

During the race itself, he was slowly into his stride but made progress over a furlong out and despite being slightly hampered, ran on to lead close home and won by half a length from the favourite Ocean Legend.

If he continues to stay sound, Coasting should make his mark in decent handicap company at the very least and the jockey felt he could be Listed class.

Later in the afternoon, Pat Dobbs went in search of a double for the yard when partnering Penchesco over a mile and quarter and the well backed favourite ran a fine race only to be beaten by the well handicapped Buddy Holly.

Winner Number Six For Stable

LIFE AND SOUL OF LINGFIELD

LIFE AND SOUL lived up to his upbeat name when winning on his seasonal reappearance at Lingfield on the all-weather this afternoon to make it winner number six for the yard this year.

The 3yo son of Azamour had shaped nicely as a juvenile when second twice over a mile in three outings.  However, he is bred to get a trip and duly appreciated the step up to 10 furlongs today when winning a shade cosily by a length and a quarter from Opera Gal.

On paper, it looked a tight five-runner classified stakes but the top-rated Life and Soul, after initially being held up by Philip Robinson, took charge well over a furlong out and stayed on nicely to win in the manner of a colt who could have a future.

Congratulations to owner Mr A D Spence for whom this was his second winner at Coombelands this season following Huff and Puff's victory last month.

HUFF AND PUFF BEATS DERBY ENTRY

HUFF AND PUFF FOURTH WINNER IN TEN RUNS

HUFF AND PUFF landed the odds at Kempton last night on only his second outing to continue the stable's fine run in becoming Coombelands' fourth winner in its last ten runs.

The 3yo son of Azamour made an encouraging start to his racing career when fifth in a Headquarters maiden last back-end over 7f and the step up in trip to 11f clearly suited him.

The 4/5 shot was always in contention, led over a furlong out and was always looking in command under Neil Callan over second placed Eshtyaaq who has a Derby entry.

The first two pulled well clear and both could be useful.  Congratulations to owner Mr A D Spence whose Huff and Puff could blow away a few more rivals this season.

PENCHESCO WINS FOR KAREN HANCOCK

PENCHESCO THIRD WINNER FROM SEVEN RUNNERS

PENCHESCO powered home at Kempton on Friday night to become the stable's third winner from its last seven runners.

Always in a handy position under Jim Crowley, the 9/1 shot challenged a furlong out, went clear inside the final furlong and pressed home his advantage to be a length and a quarter up on the line from West Emirates.

It was two years since his first and indeed last victory but he was running off a pound lower mark, so was in theory well handicapped.

Owner Mrs Karen Hancock, for whom Penchesco was her first outright horse,  bought the 5yo son of Orpen to go hurdling.  I think there'll be a few more outings planned on the flat!

Tudor Key wins for Coombelands Racing Syndicate

MOORE SUCCESS FOR STABLE WITH TUDOR

COOMBELANDS  continued its recent good spell with success at Windsor yesterday courtesy of syndicate horse Tudor Key and a fine ride by Ryan Moore.

The pair made most over the extended mile trip and despite being headed by subsequent second, Hail Promenader a furlong out, the 4yo son of Key Of Luck prevailed by a neck under a determined ride by the champion jockey.

This was Tudor’s third win for the Coombelands Racing Syndicate and also the stable’s third win in the last eight races.

The blue and yellow colours of the Coombelands Racing Syndicates should be seen to good effect this season.  If you’re interested in joining the success, there’s just one 1/10th share left in CRS horse, Medici Brave.  Please call the Racing Office on 01798 873 011 for details.

Another winner

TANGO LEADS RIVALS A MERRY DANCE

BLUE TANGO routed his 11 rivals in the last at Lingfield on Saturday when making virtually all to win by a length and a three-quarters from Pedasus.

The 9/2 shot appreciated  the drop back to a mile and a quarter from a mile and a half and the race never looked in doubt a furlong out when Jim Crowley rode him clear to record the horse’s third career win for The Green Dot Partnership.

The yard has made a bright start to the flat season with two wins, five seconds, four thirds and a fourth from its first 13 runs.

There are limited shares still available in a few select syndicate horses.  Please call the Racing Office on 01798 873 011 for details.

Curacao

CURACAO 3RD AT KEMPTON 7TH APRIL– LIMITED SHARES AVAILABLE

CUARACO, the 4yo dual-winning son of Sakhee made a highly encouraging return to action yesterday at Kempton defying a 189 day lay-off when third, beaten just three-quarters of a length.

He was always in contention over the mile and a half trip and was a little short of room a furlong out but he stayed on well over a trip arguably short of his best.

Clearly he has trained on and this half-brother to Group One winner Aqlaam, from the family of Persian Punch will hopefully make up into a top class staying handicapper this season.

He’s a consistent sort, having won or been placed in eight of his twelve starts while he is also versatile regarding conditions underfoot, having won on good to firm and soft. His next intended race is at Goodwood on 1st May.

There are limited 1/8th shares available, so for details or to arrange a private viewing on the gallops, please call the Coombelands  Racing Office on 01798 873011.

ONLY TWO SHARES AVAILABLE IN MEDICI BRAVE

MEDICI BRAVE has proved popular in the run-up to the start of the turf season and there are only two 1/10th shares left in the 3yo son of Medicean.

A May foal, he was too backward to run last year but having been gelded and given time to mature, he's come to hand nicely and should be making his racecourse debut soon.

His sire Medicean was a dual Group 1 winner having won the Eclipse and Lockinge while his dam, Valiantly, from the wonderful Juddmonte family of Interval, won over 6f, was Listed placed and achieved an official rating of 99.

If you wish to come and see him on the gallops, please call the Coombelands Racing Office on 01798 873011 to arrange a personal viewing.

Street Entertainer

Following our six placed horses in recent weeks, we were delighted to have had our first winner with Street Entertainer at Lingfield yesterday.  He is a big strapping colt by Danehill Dancer who matured well over the winter period and won impressively despite a slow early pace which was against him.  He is currently rated 79 and we hope he will now progress to run in a 0 - 85 handicap in three weeks time.

I was delighted to have a winner for George Materna who has recently purchased Truism and has a nice two-year-old colt by Langfuhr, Four Nations.

Recent runners

Our first six runners of the 2010 season have all been placed.

Tamtara ran a race full of promise at Kempton to finish third ridden by Eddie Ahern and she is due to run back at Kempton on 31st March.

Green Earth finished 2nd at Kempton in a competitive 71-85 handicap over 7f and then a good 3rd again at Lingfield yesterday behind the well handicapped Dream On Buddy giving her 11lbs. This may turn out to be a decent performance and he had Pastello who beat Tamtara a further three quarters of a length behind him.

Blue Tango was third at Kempton over 12f and is being trained for a race at Wincanton on 1st April over hurdles or 5th April at Warwick where he will be 3lbs better off on his turf rating.

Lago Indiano just missed out when second at Kempton on Wednesday.  A good first run of the season for him and he will now step up in trip to 7f for his next start.

Welsh Artist was beaten a head yesterday at Lingfield in a competitive 7f handicap.  He has wintered well and I hope will come on for the run ready to win next time out.

As you can see, we have been knocking at the door with our first runners of the 2010 season and with a change of luck in the next couple of weeks they could all be winners with their first runs of the season under their belts.

Next week sees Street Entertainer and Blue Sparkle have their first runs of the season together with Penchesco at Wincanton on Sunday.

Owners Pre Season Morning On The Gallops

COOMBELANDS OPEN MORNING A  SUCCESS

The turf season is just two weeks away and last Saturday some sixty owners and friends, past and present  turned up for the annual pre-season open morning at Coombelands.

There was a good turn-out of early birds for First Lot at 7.15 which saw 21 horses going through their paces including previous winners Green Earth, Rio Royale, Dubai Crest and Blue Tango among others.  Jockeys Jim Crowley and Eddie Creighton came down to ride work and they went upsides on two three-year-olds, Life and Soul and Valid Reason.

While it remained dry throughout the morning, spring is still slow to make an appearance, so coffees and teas were welcome in between First and Second Lots.

Two of the oldest horses in the yard, five-year-olds Penchesco and Coasting went out Second Lot which comprised a mix of juveniles, three-year-olds and older horses.  One three-year-old who caught the eye was Medici Brave (by Medicean) who was unraced as a youngster due to immaturity but he looks to be coming to himself and should make up for lost time this season.  He is a syndicate horse available in 1/10th shares and there are now just two shares available.

A sit-down hearty cooked breakfast was served in the marquee after Second Lot and went down a treat as did the Pol Roger which flowed.

Coombelands has a nice bunch of horses this year and with that little bit of luck that all yards need, Amanda and her owners should be in for a good season.

Saborido and Sierra Alpha Provide Warwick Double

Sierra Alpha provided us with our first 2yo winner of the year when landing division 2 of the EBF Maiden Stakes at Warwick on Monday afternoon.  The son of Dansili was making his first racecourse start, and, as entitled to be, was green early on before getting the hang of things and staying on really well to win by 1/2l. Our 2yo’s invariably improve a good deal for their first outing therefore this was very pleasing, and hopefully there is more to come.

Sierra Alpha’s win continues the superb recent record of the Juddmonte stallion Dansili, who sired both the first 2 in the last weekends Celebration Mile and recent Sandown winner Strawberrydaiquiri who landed a hat-trick of listed successes.

An hour later Saborido defied a 3lb rise for his recent Salisbury success when giving the Cotton, James, Slade, Tracey partnership a great thrill by battling back to win the Syd Mercer Memorial handicap by a short head.  He showed a really willing attitude and can hopefully go close in a bid for a hat trick next time.

Tomorrow Green Earth heads to Brighton for his third start, as well as Driven who appears to like the track having won there earlier in the year and finished 3rd in his latest start there. Later in the evening Pagan Force heads to Kempton for his first start following a break. Thursday Atakora, Red Intrigue and Blue Sparkle all look to head to Salisbury while Blue Dynasty and Blue Tango could provide us with our first jumping runners of the year at Fontwell on Sunday.

2yo’s looking to have their first run.

After several placed efforts last week, ATTAINABLE can hopefully get us back to winning ways at Kempton this afternoon. The daughter of Kalanisi who is out of a half sister to the great Dancing Brave, can hopefully go one better than her second there on her final start at two.

Later in the week several 2yo’s are looking to have their first starts including CAT HUNTER for new owner Mr Cohen at Lingfield on Thursday. On Friday we will hopefully be running ATAKORA, TAMTARA and BEST SHOW at Newmarket. Best Show is a breeze up purchase made earlier in the year.

Following the success of the Breeze up Bonus there is now a Yearling Bonus attached to the majority of the lots sold in England and Ireland at the forthcoming yearling sales, which start at Doncaster tomorrow (Tuesday 25th August). The yearling bonus enables registered lots to be qualified for a £10,000 bonus after winning select maidens spread out over the 2yo and 3yo careers. With up to 300 bonuses being available in 2010/11, -  25% of maiden races in UK and Ireland will carry a bonus, approximately five every week! I will be attending the majority of the sales and if anyone would like to speak to me about purchasing a yearling then please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Saborido Storms to Success

Saborido proved he stayed every yard of the 1m6f trip when landing the Pat Boakes Memorial handicap at Salisbury on Thursday, for the Cotton, James, Slade, Tracey partnership. Providing them with a great thrill he was always up with the pace before staying on gamely to win going away by 1 ¾L.  He holds an entry at Nottingham on Tuesday and back at Salisbury next Friday, both of which are possibilities before a likely try at 2m later in the year.  Saborido provided us with our 5th winner at Salisbury of the year, a total that will hopefully rise further with Count Of Tuscany, Cry For The Moon, and Theologist all also in there on Friday.

The horses have ran well this week led by Curacao who ran another great race when coming from off the pace to grab third late on in the 1m6f Isinglass handicap at Sandown, staying on really well in the closing stages he would have in all likelihood got there with another 100yards. Wilfred Pickles ran his best race of the year when 2nd in the Goldring Security Services Pembroke Cup, only finding Marching Time too good in the later stages, whom is a horse who is highly thought of and who contested a Group 1 at two. Silent Act ran a very encouraging race when finishing fastest of all when 4th at Salisbury. As did Green Earth who was having his first racecourse experience and getting the hang of things late on.

This week is looking to be very busy. Monday Blue Sparkle heads to Windsor for her second start in the EBF maiden fillies stakes, while King’s La Mont heads for the sportingbet.com handicap. We plan to send a select team to York with Camps Bay heading to the Ebor on Wednesday and Glorious Goodwood winner Classic Vintage to the Melrose Stakes on Friday, although like Sea The Stars we wouldn’t want to see to much rain. Elsewhere Driven is in at Epsom on Thursday before Count Of Tuscany, Cry For The Moon, Saborido, Theologist, Green Earth, and Tudor Key all in on Friday.

Crest Gives Spence Weekend To Remember

Dubai Crest ran out a 1/2L winner of the Sportingbet.com Handicap at Windsor yesterday afternoon.  Held up, he was always travelling well in behind but needed gaps to appear. Once they did he stayed on well to get up inside the last ½ furlong for a convincing win.  His win caped a weekend to remember for owner Alan Spence, following Jukebox Jury’s win in the Group 3 Rose of Lancaster St at Haydock on Saturday (a horse he also owns) and Chelsea’s win in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday, a club he is vice president of.

Night Crescendo ran a gallant race in defeat at the Shergar Cup meeting at Ascot on Saturday. Disappointing earlier in the week at Pontefract, this return to his favourite track produced a much improved effort as he finished a fast finishing second. Also on Saturday Count Of Tuscany, ran well when finishing 2nd in the Royal British Legion Poppy Maiden Stakes at Newmarket, however, was no match for his owner Prince Khalid Abdullah’s first string Manifest who was a mighty impressive winner.

The end of this week is looking to be busy with Curacao biding for a hat trick on Wednesday at Sandown, along with Wilfred Pickles and Silent Act at Salisbury. Thursday, could see Green Earth have his first racecourse experience, as well as Saborido who is stepping back up in trip later in the afternoon. Friday Dimensional, Tudor Key, Jazacosta and Spanish Cygnet are all possibles.

Vintage Cruises to Success At Goodwood.

Classic Vintage was the highlight of the last weeks Glorious Goodwood, when landing the Racing UK Heritage Handicap on Wednesday. Given a great ride by Jim Crowley to get a good position early on, he always travelled with the utmost of ease he was sent to the front a full 2f from home before forging clear to win by nearly 3L.

PICTURE: Mark Cranham

It was a thoroughly enjoyable day for all and provided his owners, Mr & Mrs Scott, Mr & Mrs Powell and Mrs Brody their first Glorious Goodwood success. As well as giving dad great pleasure, as he was his pick at the yearling sales. He is now a possible for the Melrose Stakes at York and will hopefully continue to progress into a decent stayer for the future.

Later that day Tottie also ran a great race in the Country Life Magazine European Breeders' Fund Fillies' And Mares' Stakes. Dropping back to 9F for the first time this year she made a bold bid for home 2f out and only just got caught in the final few strides, still somehow managing to only finish 4th despite only being beaten a neck and two short heads.

Earlier in the week we had our Goodwood owners lunch on the Tuesday, and hope that everyone who attended had an enjoyable time. That afternoon Camps Bay ran a solid race in the 1m6f handicap only being beaten 5L.

Monday and Tuesday this week are quiet but the remainder of the week looks to be very busy. Driven heads to Brighton on Wednesday for a handicap worth £26,000 this is a great effort on Brighton’s behalf and them and the race sponsor John Smith’s should be applauded. Jazacosta also heads to Brighton, while Night Crescendo heads up to Pontefract, for a race that is a step down in grade to the competitive heritage handicaps he has been running in so far this year.

Thursday, Rio Royale at Brighton, Admiral Sandhoe at Folkestone, and King’s La Mont at Sandown are all possibilities. Friday Wilfred Pickles, Blue Tango and Silent Act all hold entries. While at the weekend Tungsten Strike, Camps Bay, Night Crescendo, Admiral Sandhoe, Count Of Tuscany, Dubai Crest and Dimensional are all in.

Look at the Weekend & A Glorious Week Ahead

A busy week gets underway on Saturday with Tudor Key, Tottie and Curacao all set to run. Tudor Key, is looking to follow up his recent win at Lingfield, in The Emirates NBD Cup Heritage Handicap at Ascot.  It looks on paper to be a very competitive handicap but he ran well there when drawn on the wrong side in the Britannia at Royal Ascot and hopefully can continue his good recent form.  Tottie heads up to York for the Skybet.com EBF Fillies Handicap, a filly who only two runs ago was contesting the Group 1 Oaks at Epsom and who was Listed placed earlier in the year. She can hopefully take advantage of this drop in class and provide owners             Julian & Sarah Richmond Watson with a memorable day, as they also have their Oaks winning filly Look Here running in the King George the VI later in the afternoon.  The evening concludes with Curacao who heads back to the site of his recent win, when lining up for the Oliver Grub Handicap Stakes at Salisbury. Staying on well when winning there last time he steps up a further 2f here.

Sunday sees Night Crescendo head back to Ascot where he has a great record of 3 wins from 5 starts.  He ran well there last time in the Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot following an interrupted preparation and being 2lb lower here and with a better run into the race he can hopefully go close.

Glorious Goodwood gets underway on Tuesday and owners are reminded that our Goodwood lunch party begins with drinks at 11.30. If you would like to come and see your horses out at exercise beforehand then please hesitate to do so.  That day we have Camps Bay and Classic Vintage both in the Detica Summer Handicap Stakes over 1m 6f.  Classic Vintage also has an entry there on Wednesday in the Racing UK Heritage Handicap Stakes.

Tungsten Strike bids to go one better than last year in Coutts Goodwood Cup on Thursday, he ran a great race when 2nd in the race last year to the great Yeats, and always appears to up his game at his beloved Goodwood.

Friday is looking to be a rest day before Dubai Crest on Saturday. He has been running well in competitive handicaps at Royal Ascot and at Epsom on Derby day. Although this is likely to be as competitive it will be a drop in grade.  Warning Song is also a possible for the nursery handicap.

Tudor Key All Out Win at Lingfield

Tudor Key got back to winning ways on Wednesday afternoon to win the EBF Paul Kellaway Memorial Classified St, for the Coombelands Racing Syndicate I, a short head in what was a tightly fought battle up the home straight. Given a good ride under Jim Crowley, who used his initiative and sat close to the pace in what was a slowly run affair, Tudor Key and Film Set locked horns all of 2f out, with Tudor Key just getting up at the right time. Providing the handicapper doesn’t over react to this success he may now go to Newmarket or Goodwood later in the month.

Earlier in the week, Pagan Flight and Blue Tango both finished third, and hold entries early next week. Our remaining runner for this week is Saborido at Pontefract on Friday evening for the Cotton, James, Slade, Tracey partnership, and will hopefully continue the run of form we have had during the past week.

Curacao Win Makes Saturday Double For Bourbonella:
Curacao ran out a 1 1/2L winner of the Picardo Chevrolet Handicap at Salisbury on Saturday evening. Coming across to the stands side on the rain softened ground he stayed on well to win going away at the finish. It meant a double on the day for his dam Bourbonella, after his half brother Aqlaam won the Gr2 Summer Mile earlier in the day. There remains a 50% share available in Curacao, for further information please see the 'Horses For Sale' section.

Classic Vintage ran a great race in defeat at Newmarket on Friday, finishing third in the Egerton House Stables Handicap. Staying on well from the back of the field he did the best of those whom had been held up in the race. He is likely to have one more run before the Melrose St at York's Ebor meeting.

Runners for this week include, Pagan Flight at Windsor tonight, Blue Tango at Southwell on Tuesday and Tudor Key at Lingfield on Wednesday as well as possibly Saborido and Cry For The Moon on Friday.

Classic Vintage and Future Runners

Classic Vintage heads to Newmarket today for the final race of their prestigious July meeting. A recent winner at Salisbury, he can hopefully continue his upward curve this afternoon, before possibly heading to Glorious Goodwood later in the month.  Other possible runners in week ahead include, Curacao in the Picador Chevrolet Handicap St at Salisbury late on Saturday evening. Having had a short break following his latest start at Goodwood, this half brother to Aqlaam, can hopefully appreciate the slight drop in grade and go close. Pagan Flight and Blue Tango both hold entries early next week, the later unsuited from having to try and come from off the pace in a slowly run race at Haydock last time. Meanwhile Tudor Key is a possible at Lingfield on Wednesday.

In other news it was great to see stable jockey Jim Crowley record his first Group 1 win aboard Lord Shanakill in Chantilly last Sunday. It will no doubt be the first of many and there are not many jockeys that can claim to be a Group 1 winning jockey and to have ridden in the Grand National! Jim is continuing to have another great year having ridden 59 winners all ready.

Looking at the updated pick-10 standings, Alison Swayne is the current leader in what is a closely fought contest, the current top 10 placing are:

1- Alison Swayne                 54

2- Charlene Stevens             48

=3 Dean Angell                    44

=3 Kris Vasileva                   44

5- Stephen Harwood             40

6- Valerie Slade                   38

7- Nigel Dunger                   36

=8 Andrew Brooke                34

=8 Mark Tracey                   34

=8 Michael Gibbs                 34

TOTTIE HOPES

This afternoon we are all very excited about TOTTIE running in the Group 1 Investec Oaks at Epsom.  She may have been beaten 6L by the more fancied Midday on her seasonal reappearance in the Lingfield Oaks trial however, she was only 1/2l behind her in a Nemarket listed race at two, and appears to have come on well from her seasonal reappearance.  Tottie has already won around Brighton and again handled the undulations of Lingfield well last time.  She doesn’t know that she is 100-1 and we are all hopeful she can run a big race for Mr and Mrs Richmond-Watson, who also were the owner-breeders of last years winner Look Here.

In other news WARNING SONG again ran another good race last night once again finishing 3rd in the 5f ‘June Maiden Auction St’ at Sandown, his second placing within a week.  Up with the pace all the way, he was just denied in the final 50 yards, the front three pulling 7l clear of the remainder.  The winner is now heading to Royal Ascot and if you too would like a Royal Ascot runner then this colt that is still FOR SALE! is a possible for the Windsor Castle St, for further information, please see the Horses For Sale section.

Horses For Sale

There are several updates on the horses we currently have for sale.

Rio Royale won The Begbies Traynor Handicap at Salisbury on 14th May over 6f.  He is due to run again this coming week.

Warning Song ran for the first time on the same day in a 5f maiden for two year olds and was a fast finishing 4th, ridden by Adam Kirby, he reported that the horse would benefit from the step up in trip to 6f and should win next time out.

Curacao has been placed in two runs to date this season and is due to run at Goodwood tomorrow.

All of the above can be viewed on the website and I would be delighted to show them to you on the gallops or at the races.

Amanda

Dubai Crest at Beverely

Mark and I were delighted to have our first turf winner  of the season with our first turf runner of 2009. Dubai Crest won going away at Beverley on Wednesday for Alan Spence and  was well ridden by Neil Callan on his first ride for us.

Tudor Key ran a good race in defeat at Newmarket under top weight after pulling a bit too hard in the early stages of the race and Truism was beaten less than three lengths in a competitive handicap at Newbury on Friday.

This week we look to Windsor on Monday with Kings La Mont and Blue Tango, Bath on Tuesday with Saborido, Kempton on Wednesday with Curacao and later in the week, Wilfred Pickles, Silken Act and Classic Vintage having their first runs of the season.

Ride Of The Year 2008

Jim Crowley won ride of the year 2008 at last weeks “Lesters” awards. The award sponsored by the Racing Post and determined on readers votes, was awarded to Jim  for his riding of Bulwark in the Totesport.com Chester Cup. He beat Darryl Holland for his ride on Tungsten Strike at Goodwood, Richard Hughes and Royston French. Well done Jim.

£10,000 bonus for Craven and Guineas Breeze Up Sale at Newmarket

This weeks Craven Breeze Up Sale took place at Tattersalls on 14th-16th April.  There were 183 two year olds catalogued and for the first time at breeze up sales, this year the vendors and sales company are offering a £10,000 bonus to each 2yo sold if they win a 2yo maiden, conditions, Group or Listed race before December 2009.  Similarly they will pay £5,000 to a 2yo that wins a selling, claiming or nursery handicap by December 2009. The bonus is paid out on the first win for the respective 2yo. Each horse can win no more than one bonus payment.

The prices held up well and it was hard to buy,  I will however return for the Guineas Breeze Up Sale on on 30th April to 1st May where the same bonus will be on offer. I would be delighted if anyone would like to come to the sales with me or would be interested in purchasing a 2yo with a chance of winning the £10,000 bonus.

Chasca
Chasca won her first race at Lingfield today over 6f. By Namid, winner of the Prix de L'Abbaye Group 1 and out of Daganya a Listed winner over 6f, this filly won going away from her field after travelling well and being very professional in her first ever start.  She won't mind a cut in the ground and we were delighted for Lady Clague, her family and stud Groom Pat Murtagh who bred and produced her at Newberry Stud in Ireland. Roll on the start of the turf season.

Cheltenham week

Wednesday of Cheltenham week and what a wonderful weeks racing so far.  Mastermind is just being tacked up for the Queen Mother Champion Chase and so much more to look forward to.  Although Cheltenham is the pinnacle of the National Hunt Season, it also signals the return of the Flat Racing Season proper with only 17 days to the start of the Turf Racing Season at Doncaster. Our team are coming on nicely and we had our first proper work morning of the year last Saturday.

Every year we run a pick a ten competition where you pick five two year olds and five older horses from the yard.  It is only £10 to enter. When the details are finalised I will publish the competition and details of horses in training on the website for you to download if you wish to take part.

John Terry runs tonight at Kempton and is only 1lbs higher in the hanidcap for a good 2nd there recently.  Rio Royale run on Friday at Lingfield and we have Chasca having her first run at Lingfield on Saturday and possibly Blue Tango there as well.

Inquest just misses out at Lingfield

Inquest finished second beaten only a neck yesterday at Lingfield having looked the likely winner when Jim Crowely took the quickest route round the final turn into the straight.  He was just caught on the line by the fast finishing Bombardier Wells.  He now has a chance next Wednesday to register his first win, again at Lingfield.

The day started very sadly for us all at Coombelands as Dimander, who won at Lingfield for us on 31st January, died as a result of colic while being treated at The Newmarket Equine Centre.  Ian Wright and his team of vets had cared for him for a fortnight but in the end were unable to save him. He was a big but very kind horse and we were looking forward to running him on the turf this season as a three year old.  Our thoughs are with Lady Clague who bred and owned him together with her son Jonathan and daughter Penny.

Rio Royale has his first run of 2009 tomorrow at Lingfield. This colt is for sale and his details can be found on our website.  He is trying a mile for the first time and is well drawn in stall one.

Rocoppelia romps home

30th January 2009

Rocoppelia recorded his first win at Lingfield today for his owners John and OdileConnolly. This also gave us at Coombelands our first winner of 2009. Ridden by our in form Jockey, Jim Crowley, Rocoppelia was wearing blinkers for the first time on the racecourse.  He broke well from the stalls and travelled nicely, quickening up well in the home straight to win by one and a quarter lengths.  A very satisfying result for us all.

We now look forward to John Terry, who runs tomorrow at Lingfield.

New Season

With the turn of the year, it is time to reflect on our results for the 2008 season.  Two hundred and ninety four runners have yielded thirty four winners and one hundred and eight placed runners.

Our older horses did us proud.  Tungsten Strike won The March Listed Stakes for the second year running at Goodwood and was a very gallant 2nd in the Goodwood Cup to Yeats.  Night Crescendo found his winning form in September and won two valuable handicaps at the end of the season.  Camps Bay and Bandama were placed in Heritage Handicaps before Bandama gained a well deserved win at Newmarket and John Terry won in a very good time at Lingfield and was placed on many occasions. Chocolate Caramel also won two races in the first half of the season before being sold.

Of the three year olds, Midships just missed out in several big handicaps at the start of the season before winning his handicap at Newmarket. He was placed behind subsequent Royal Ascot winner Colony and in front of subsequent Breeders Cup winner Conduit. He has now joined Bobby Frankel in America to continue his racing career for Mr Abdullah and we wish him every success.  Benedetto was most consistent winning three times and placed on five occasions. Other winners included dual winner Colourways, Riverscape, Celtic Dragon, Dancing Dik, Flash Of Colour and Regal Best.

The most encouraging statistic for me was the fact that we had more two year old winners, than three year olds and 56% of our two year old runners finished in the first four places. They are something to really look forward to in 2009.

Winning colts Blue Dynasty, Blue Tango, Classic Vintage, Dimander, Dubai Crest, Hurakan, Jazacosta, Supernoverre, Tudor Key and Truism will hopefully continue to improve with another winter and more time to mature further.  Winning fillies Dialect, Sampi, Spanish Cygent and Tottie will be running to collect some valuable black type to enhance their breeding value.

On the jockey front, I would like to congratulate Jim Crowley who rode the majority of our winners this season.  Jim finished 10th in the flat jockey’s championship this year and rode over 100 winners collecting over 1 million in prize money for his connections. We are delighted that we will have his services for the 2009 season.

We currently have 74 horses on our horses in training for 2009, details of which can be found on the horses in training section of this website.  Also on the horses for sale section is  a selection of two and three year olds that there are shares available for purchase. Please do take time to view this section as we have a particularly nice group of horses for sale.

Looking forward to racing this year.

Flying

The horses have been in great form recently with three of our last five runners winning. Dancing Dik, who had been unlucky in running the time before at Goodwood had no such problems this time when landing the RAB Capital Handicap at Windsor. The son of Diktat was in command in the final furlong pulling away to win by 3L. He will now hopefully defy a 6lb penalty gained for that success when he reappears at Kempton on Wednesday.

The following day Colourways was a taking winner of a 12F fillies maiden at Newbury. Very green on debut the good looking daughter of Singspiel had learnt a lot from her previous outing and produced a very professional display to win by 1 ½L. She is now likely to be upped to Listed class to try gain some all important black type.

The good run continued yesterday with Rio Royale, who ran on gamely to land the European Breeders' Fund Median Auction Maiden Stakes. It was nice for the son of Captain Rio to get his head in front having been narrowly second on two of his four previous starts. A consistent performer who is taking his racing well, he is currently for sale for £50,000 +VAT and would be a fun horse for someone to have.

Earlier this month Tudor Key ran a great race on only his second start finishing 4th in the Listed Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot. Short of room during the closing stages, which didn’t help his cause, he stayed on well to finish only 3L behind Free agent who is now as short as 25-1 for next years Derby. There remains two 10% shares available in this son of Key Of Luck which can be purchased for £3,000 + VAT.

There has recently been a major pedigree update for the Sakhee ex Bourbonella, as he is a ½ brother to the Aqlaam, who was an impressive winner of the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot. He may be purchased for £72,000 +VAT.

A first at Great Leighs.

Chocolate Caramel became our 5th winner of the year by landing the High Easter Handicap Stakes at the newly opened Great Leighs on Thursday evening.  Held up in touch, by stable jockey Jim Crowley, he travelled well before taking command inside the final furlong to win easily by 3L.

It is an exciting time, with many of the older horses having their first outing of the year. Along with some of the more forward 2yo’s who are approaching their first run, we currently plan to have runners at Goodwood and Newmarket next weekend. With Rio Royale, Jazacosta and Inside Knowledge likely to be heading somewhere within the next 7-10 days.

Flash Of Colour Continues Our Good Recent Run

Flash Of Colour became our 3rd winner of the year last Saturday when losing his maiden tag in the ‘Digibet Maiden Stakes’ at Kempton Park. He travelled with the utmost ease, and quickened up nicely in the home straight to win by an eased down 4L. This was a decent performance from the son of Averti, who was following up his short-head defeat at Lingfield a week earlier.

Prior to this Bendetto followed up his win at Lingfield with another good run there. After having a troubled passage throughout the race, he stayed on well to finish third. The yard is currently in great form, with 27% of runners winning and 73% of them finishing in the first four.

A RECORD BREAKING WAY TO START THE YEAR

John Terry became our first winner of 2008 when landing the Book Online @ lingfieldpark.co.uk Handicap at Lingfield Park on Saturday 2nd February. He battled on gamely taking the contest by a neck from the improving handicapper Wicked Daze. Who, has gone on to frank the form by winning next time. This success was made all the more impressive by the time; 2m 28.19s meant that John Terry had broken the previous track record, which had stood for 15months.

On Saturday 15th March we will be holding an owners champagne breakfast morning. If anyone would like to come and view our facilities and see the horses we have for sale, please contact the office on 01798 873011.

Ventura in Listed Success

Last night Ventura ran out a wide margined winner of the Listed Hyde stakes, run at Kempton Park. Returning to the all weather for the first time since her debut as a 2yo, Ventura was always travelling with the upmost of ease before quickening up well under jockey Jim Crowley to win by an eased down 2 ½ L. This was a highly impressive performance from the daughter of Chester House, who was not only taking on the colts for the first time, but she was also the only 3yo in the field.

This success capped off a great season for Ventura, which has seen her win 3 of her 7 starts and only ever finish out of the first 2 on one occasion. She will now continue her training career with Bobby Frankel in America where I hope she will run at Group Level. At the end of her training career, she will become a valuable broodmare prospect for Prince Kahlid Abdulla’s Juddmonte Farms.

Intiquilla off to France

Intiquilla is declared for the Listed Prix Belle De Nuit at Fontainebleau on Monday 26th November, a race that is run over 1m4f. After progressing well through the summer, and an encouraging performance in the Gillies Stakes last time, we are hopeful of a big run as well as picking up some valuable black type.

Tungsten Ready To Strike

Mark flew out to Australia last Sunday in order to ride Tungsten Strike in his final workout, before the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday.

Working over 7f at Flemington’s Racetrack, it was the strongest Tungsten had worked since his Listed success at Goodwood earlier this year; he did so in a manner, which left Mark very happy with the horse.

It has also become apparent that Mark is not the only person pleased with the horse, as Tungsten has begun to attract the attention of the Australian media. With 4 separate articles appearing in the national press in as many days.

With the final declaration stage, and the arrival of Tungsten’s jockey Darryll Holland both set for this weekend, we now eagerly await the race, which is set to be run at 4a.m GMT.

Tungsten Strikes Again and Earns Trip to Melbourne

Last Saturday Tungsten Strike defied a 5lb penalty that he had earned for his previous Group 2 and 3 successes, to take the Listed March Stakes at Goodwood by 6L. With this increasing his total prize fund to just under £218,000.

He now will be heading out to Australia for the prestigious Melbourne Cup, while we eagerly await the weights to come out. For a race that stops a nation.

Coasting to Success at Glorious Goodwood

After all the wet weather of this summer, last week we were treated to a splendid spell of sunshine and a great weeks racing at Glorious Goodwood.

The highlight of the week for Mark and I was Coasting's 4L success in the Royal & SunAlliance Nursery.  Ridden by Jim Crowley in what was his first success at Glorious Goodwood since converting to the flat from the national hunt.  It also proved to be a first success there for Coasting's owners Sir John Ritblat and Sir David and Jennifer Sieff, whom were all in attendance for the great win.  Coasting will now head for the Shergar Cup Juvenile Nursery this Saturday.

Above Coasting Wins the Nursery Handicap.

Along with this success, Camps , for owners Bob and Pauline Scott was narrowly touched off into second place in the BCG heritage handicap just being unable to defy the 8lb rise from the handicapper for his success at Windsor ealier in July.  As well as this Pagan Sword ran into a good second in the final race of the week at Goodwood the Bluesquare.com Apprentice stakes, for the Gap partnership.  Given a good ride by the late replacement Kevin May, after Luke Morris's nasty fall in the race before.

We are now coming up to a busy time of year, with runners nearly every day along with the yearling sales which, will be starting shortly.

7th June 2007

Mark and I are delighted that our horses are running so well at present.  Seven wins in May, including our first two year old winner of the season in Coasting at Newbury, together with some decent placed efforts, made for a very pleasing month.

Our two runners in The Henry II Stakes at Sandown last week did not enjoy the soft ground. Bulwark faired best with a very respectable third placing and Tungsten Strike not far behind in fifth. They have both come out of the race well and are on target for some faster ground at Ascot in The Gold Cup.

June started well with a big handicap win at Epsom on Derby day for Nosferatu, ridden by my brother in law, Jim Crowley. Nosferatu now heads for The Northumberland Plate at the end of June and Jim continues to ride in fine form with 11 winners in the last ten days, including a Group winner and two doubles. Owner Lady Clague who bred Nosferatu at Newberry Stud in Ireland has five horses with us. Nosferatu has now won both his starts this season, as has Intiquilla, a half sister to Bandama, who has been placed twice and now heads to the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot. Many congratulations to her, her family and stud manager Pat Murtagh for their winners to date.

We are coming up to a busy weekend, three runners today, four tomorrow at Goodwood and ten runners on Saturday. There is a small respite on Monday and Tuesday next week before another busy end to the week and then straight into Royal Ascot week.  Our confirmed runners for Ascot are as follows, with hopefully some to join the team after their runs this week:

Tuesday: The Coventry Stakes - Coasting

Wednesday: The Hunt Cup - Night Crescendo

Thursday: The Gold Cup - Bulwark and Tungsten Strike, The King George V Handicap - Intiquilla, The Brittania Handicap - Jo'burg

Friday: The Wolferton Stakes - Bandama

Saturday: The Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap - Bandama and John Terry

24th May 2007

Our horses have been in great form on the racetrack in the last four weeks. Seven winners including The Group 3 Sagaro Stakes at Ascot with Tungsten Strike. Our first two year old winner at Newbury with Coasting. Three fillies breaking their maidens, enhancing their broodmare potential and Nosferatu continuing to build on his reputation as a decent staying prospect for the season.  We have also had ten placed runners including Bulwark's personal best effort to date in finishing a close up third to Sergent Cecil in the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup at York.

Next week we look foward to the Henry II Stakes at Sandown in which we have both Tungsten Strike and Bulwark entered and several two year old runners making their debuts as well at The Vodafone Derby meeting at Epsom.

Tungsten Strike wins the Group 3 Woodcote Stud Sagaro Stakes

Owners John Connolly & Odile Griffith

Tungsten Strike led from start to finish to win the Woodcote Stud Sagaro Stakes at Ascot. The son of Smart Strike out of Bathilde, bred by Willie Carson, never looked like relinquishing the lead.

Amanda Perrett said: "Maybe a year on and stronger he will come back and get the Gold Cup trip this year. Last year he was not quite strong enough to get home. He has done nothing but improve as he was rated 66 when he started his three-year-old career."

New Web Site
It gives me great pleasure to launch our website. There have been numerous people involved in collecting all of the information and pictures and I hope you will visit our site on many occasions.

Coombelands Stables is a wonderful place to train racehorses. As you will see from our facilities page we have every conceivable facility on offer for each horse. Mark and I would urge you to come and visit our training establishment first hand, as my Father Guy has created something quite unique at Coombelands over the years.

With the turf season only two weeks away, the horses are just starting to do some stronger work towards their first races of the year. Surrey Spinner supplied us with our first winner at Lingfield last week and we are looking forward to many more as the season progresses.
